Serbia marks its World Group II debut with a first-ever meeting with Japan. With two of the world's top five, Serbia will be a tough proposition for the Japanese team, which also started in World Group II in 2008 and advanced to the World Group play.

Serbia came through 2008 Europe/Africa Zone Group I and then defeated Croatia to qualify for this year's World Group II. Japan last competed in the World Group in 2007.
