Franz Ferdinand
Signed up for just three other festivals besides Exit, Franz Ferdinand have been rehearsing and working on their new album, expected in October this year. Their third studio album is still a mystery. Rumour has it that it might be called ` Favourite Lie` and that the first single might be ` What She Came For` , and since Alex Kapranos, Nick McCarthy, Bob Hardy and Paul Thomson have apperently been under the influence of Afrobeat, it is impossible to predict anything with certainty.
This most popular British and one of the world`s leading indie-rock groups today has already earned its place in the history of world pop music, since they had their first great success with maxi-single `Darts of Pleasure` only two years after they were formed in 2001.
Initially they got together with an idea to make music girls will like and dance to. Having in mind that they were influenced by the arty bands of the New Wave era of the 70ies, such as the dark and uncommunicative ` Joy Division` or the innovative ` Gang of Four`, it is a true enigma how they have succedeed in their intentions. Perhaps it is partly due to their original idea to sound like Donna Summer or Prince.
In 2004 the album Franz Ferdinand was released by an independent label `Domino Records`, soon reaching the third place in the UK charts. It was presented to the American market by more powerful ` Epic Records`. Their success grew bigger with the single ` The Dark of The Matinee` as it became a mega-hit on radio stations and in clubs. The video for the same song with original photography in greyish-green colours singled them out from the complete world production and revealed a great artistic potential, which they soon proved with new hits such as ` Take Me Out` and ` This Fire` .
In 2005 they released their second album `You Could Have It So Much Better` with hit singles ` Do You Want To` and ` Walk Away`.
Cypress Hill
This is deffinitely one of those bands that has a huge fan base wherever they appear. It is no secret that they always create a sizzling atmosphere, whether they have a new album or not (one is supposed to come out this year, still unnamed) and wheter they are given negative reviews. Last year B-Real, Sen Dog, DJ Muggs and Eric Bobo performed as part of Rock the Bells Tour with Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Clan, Nas and Rage Against Machine.
Serbian fans had an opportunity to see them at the fourth Exit, the concert having been one of the best and most crowded parties at the festival. ` Serbia, you REALLY know how to party!` shouted B-Real expressing the band`s thrill.
Cypress Hill`s recognizable style developed during the nineties ranges from relaxed latino rhythms to raging hard-core guitar riffs. Led by charismatic DJ Muggs` producer skills and B-Real` s specific rep expression, Cypress Hill have become one of the most influential bands of our time.
One thing that has contributed to their fame outside the rep music fan circles is their advocacy around the legalization of cannabis consumption, which is also a frequent light-motive in their songs.
After the success of cult single ` How I Could Just Kill A Man` they debuted with their first album in 1991. Two years later, with album ` Black Sunday` including hit single `Insane in The Brain` they rocketed to stardom. Their popularity brought them closer to white audiences, which then resulted in joint performances with alternative rock bands and taking part in big festivals such as Lollapalooze. The third album ` Temple of Doom` (1995) introduces them in a calmer and darker mood, with no real hit, which was noted by both audiences and critics. The following three years the band was going through changes and pursuing individual careers, only to have a comeback in 1998 with album `IV` . In 2000 they released a double album ` Scull & Bones`, which presented the group in a dual light -casual hip-hop style combined with a more aggressive rock sound. The single ` Superstar` was a huge MTV hit and it directed them towards the crossover scene, which is obvious on ` Stone Riders` (2001). In 2004. they released ` Till Death Do Us Part` with Jamaican reggae and dub influences, thus going back to their music roots.
The Raveonettes
The Raveonettes have always managed to stretch limits and surprise audiences as well as critics. This is why each album of theirs has had heavy media attention in all important music magazines. The Rolling Stone, NME, Q Magazine and others eagerly await anything this most prominent Danish band does, and label them without exception as a rock refreshment which has become a trademark of the North European scene. An authentic, somewhat dark sound with nostalgic tributes to simple and ` clean` tones of the 60s and 70s rock, together with intensive guitar sound and lyrics full of crude emotions freed of any mainstream restraints, constitute the basis for the sound of The Raveonettes.
The image of a charming pop duet can be creditted not just to their appearance, but to their relations with the public and statements in which their music rolemodels are clearly revealed, and their creativeness which has brought them nothing but success never mystified.Being ambitious, fresh, and energetic in live performances, they are very saught after and often appear in concerts.
By the end of the last year they released their fourth studio album ` Lust, lust, lust`, and the year 2000 is envisaged for a tour, including a large part of Europe. WE are looking forward to July 2nd when this tireless duo will play at Belgrade Arena, with their new album and their biggest hits so far.
It is time for some creative noise, crude emotions, no-name restlessness and plenty of good, unusual, old-fashioned but also so fresh rock and roll.
